Vietri sul Mare
|
The city of Vietri sul Mare rises in a small and evocative gulf at the beginning of the Amalfi Coast.
The center of the city extends on the hills behind the coast and it is dominated by the church of San Giovanni Battista, the main monument of the city, with an elegant dome decorated with coloured slabs of majolica.
At the slopes of the hilly center there is the zone of Marina di Vietri, a quarter that is direct on the sea, with a beautiful beach characterized by the presence of a tower of the 16th century.
The other smaller hamlets of the territory of Vietri are Molina, where there are a lot of mills and Raito, that is like a balcony on the gulf of Salerno.
In Vietri sul Mare the production of the ceramics has been always important; it is an activity that started in the Middle Ages and today Vietri is considered one of the most important centers of artistic and traditional ceramic production in Italy.
